Sunday Squad (feat. Eric Island) - song lyrics

Ay, what up y'all... this one's for all the homies I used to go to church with
And shared the highs and lows in life, nah mean? Y'all know who you are

You need a Sunday Squad you can go to church with
To share all your joys and hurts with, so that you can
Do life (So that you can do life) and everything is
Alright (Everything is alright)
You need a Sunday Squad spend half the day with
A squad you can trust to pray with, for when you don't
Feel right (When you don't feel right) so everything is
Alright (Everything is alright)

You need a dude like Clarence, a brotha that
Connects with the homies, but also your parents
I mean a solid dude who makes the bombest food
And won't hesitate to show you he's committed and caring (Alright)
And speaking of which, you need Karen (Yeah) she's quiet but
In reality, the queen of hospitality (Yeah)
Also makes food to make your palate scream
But avoids the attention to keep a valid team
Speaking of which, whatever team he on
You need a dude to speak his mind like my man Kyon (Come on)
He won't hold back what he's thinking (Right?)
But if a bully needs a word, he'll give it without blinking
And there's Dave, he can teach you a lesson, about
Being a consistent, non-anxious presence, and
In the same vein, if you hang with Vanessa for
Long enough, her baked goods are gonna bless ya (You know that's right)
You need Jacob, the thoughtful and deeper one (Uh huh)
You need Melvin, who always is lots of fun (Alright)
You need Ariel, always comin' up with plans (Let's go)
You need Eric who can fix anything with his hands (Let's do it)
A squad like this, makes for good fellowship (Uh huh)
Because without it the church would be hella sick (Hella sick)
So if your church don't seem legit
You might need to change up who you're doing it wit'

You need a Sunday Squad you can go to church with
To share all your joys and hurts with, so that you can
Do life (So that you can do life) and everything is
Alright (Everything is alright)
You need a Sunday Squad spend half the day with
A squad you can trust to pray with, for when you don't
Feel right (When you don't feel right) so everything is
Alright (Everything is alright)

Dear Father forgive me 'cause I'm down here strugglin'
Got my back against the wall and my thoughts keep jugglin'
I'm trynna balance the game inside my brain with training
At times I tap into Your source, I feel my soul's vibration
These trials and tribulations that I'm facin' while I'm livin'
Got me trynna live righteous, but they slang criticism
Same folks in the church you find in the streets doin' dirt
Dismiss they discretions and have the nerve to judge my worth
But ain't it nice to know you got a friend in Jesus
When the burden gets heavy and the prayers don't reach us
Can't nobody do it better than Jehovah above
And every time I mess it up He keep on showin' me love
I need a Sunday squad for when them times get hard
Gotta put on the whole armor of God and call a legion to war
If Satan's on my back and I'm under attack (Then what?)
My squad won't second guess, my Sunday squad'll react (That's wassup)

For this verse I ain't saying no names, but certain
People, yo, without 'em then life ain't the same
Sometimes these folks are yelling and mad
But I appreciate the good in 'em as well as the bad
I'm talking bout the church gossip (Uh huh), they might not
Know their behavior is toxic (Well) but maybe they work
For the government (Okay) instead of judging it
They'll resource the need after they uncover it
And that one dude, who struggles with addiction
Knows that bootstrappin' is a capitalist fiction (That's right)
So if he gets clean (Uh huh) and knows the who's who
He'll help others who struggle just like he used to (Yeah)
And that's just a fraction of the pack of
Jills and Jacks and whites and blacks you gotta
Attract to build a faction of compassion in
Action, so you can get some traction
'Cause back then, we was them, they was us, so don't
Discount the squad in the back of the bus, you got a
Choice now (Choice now), it'll determine whether you
Walk fast alone, or far together

You need a Sunday Squad you can go to church with
To share all your joys and hurts with, so that you can
Do life (So that you can do life) and everything is
Alright (Everything is alright)
You need a Sunday Squad spend half the day with
A squad you can trust to pray with, for when you don't
Feel right (When you don't feel right) so everything is
Alright (Everything is alright)

You need a Sunday Squad you can go to church with
To share all your joys and hurts with, so that you can
Do life (So that you can do life) and everything is
Alright (Everything is alright)
You need a Sunday Squad spend half the day with
A squad you can trust to pray with, for when you don't
Feel right (When you don't feel right) so everything is
Alright (Everything is alright)
For when you don't feel right (When you don't feel right)
So everything is alright (Everything is alright)
For when you don't feel right (When you don't feel right)
So everything is alright (Everything is alright)

When I think about comparisons I think about how we compare our sins, but it's really just a pair of sins Like when our parents sin, and we spare our sense And we share our sins like when a parrot sins I'm staring since the fact, is that it's sad but true that This is what we do as Americans in rap, but (It's a trap) And in the same way, another game's played And it happens all the time like holiday parades It's the idea that, when we measure success It's a war with ourselves on whether we're blessed So we're fighting our shadow, internal battles, trying to decide on how well we rap But our dreams won't last if we can't get past the past 'cause (It's a trap) Now I think of how i've failed in every one of these tests Just like when I used to front, because I wanted respect And so I tried so hard to fake like I belonged in a club But in the end I fell. I guess I wasn't a thug I also used to try to look at other people who sinned And like a Pharisee I scoffed, 'cause I thought, that I was better than them I never tried to understand what was behind their decisions And I didn't recognize that, the log that I had, was blinding my vision I just assumed that, I was immune to that, because I knew that, I wouldn't do THAT But by doing that, I just proved that, I COULD lose track, and then do it back Or even worse stuff, like prideful arrogant, hurtful stuff Like saying I was better 'cause of church and it sucks Cause a lot of what i've learned is the knowledge that the world is in need of love It's common having greed and stuff, and it's something that I'm guilty of But what I'm really wanting's to move past my trash to do lasting acts that'll fill me up 'Cause there's nothing more satisfying than coming in As I'm crying and humbly recognizing that someone like me can change So I'm a make it plain and i'll show em my faith in gaining a whole other way to play the Comparison game It's a trap, to look at him or her And think what would occur If we had this or that (It's a trap) It's a trap, no matter where you've been All gifts they come from Him No need to fill the gap (It's a trap) It's a trap, to look at him or her And think what would occur If we had this or that (It's a trap) It's a trap, no matter where you've been All gifts they come from Him No need to fill the gap (It's a trap) I love to dip in my whip, it's a Volvo, 2009 Couldn't get a new one, but it's blue and it's like new so really I'm doing fine Cause what I used to drive was also a blue Volvo but a '96, and if you Tried to tried to tune into the radio station you would just get sick of all the Rattling, shaking and creaking, I went berserk Had to put a boombox in the backseat with the bluetooth cause the radio didn't work But I was still grateful to drive it, in a season of strugglin' and strivin' Cause it meant I could live my life and always have me a ride Without relying on mass transit ridin' But going back I remember the time when, that bus was freedom, as a kid Only way I got around were the wheels on my bike, and finally I didn't need 'em But way back, I remember what I felt like, I wanted that first bike SO BAD, that I was ignoring all the other blessings that I had It was a pattern that was bad for my health, cause I could Only see others... compared to myself And every comparison was an awareness in the sin of regretful jealousy But then friends would see me and see only good, they failed to see The rest, the struggles and drama within my family All they saw were all the issues I conquered or dealt with handily And umm... it's kinda silly, if they'd been deliberate, they woulda Seen that my mistakes are not better or worse, they're just kinda different So if you live for Christ and you wanna get far Take it from my man, Admiral Ackbar Everybody wants that fame (Fame), but what if it comes with pain? No one can possibly win comparison games It's a trap, to look at him or her And think what would occur If we had this or that (It's a trap) It's a trap, no matter where you've been All gifts they come from Him, no need to fill the gap (It's a trap) It's a trap, to look at him or her And think what would occur If we had this or that (It's a trap) It's a trap, no matter where you've been All gifts they come from Him, no need to fill the gap (It's a trap) I never did like making comparisons, I tried to act like I never really cared again But every time that I would get compared to them I had to change my shoes, clothes, and hair again And I was scared again, 'cause what are they gonna say When they see the same jeans that I wear again Or the soles on my shoes that are wearing thin Plus a coat that my brother had to share again And it's like that, I can't fight that, 'cause it might last into night class In the end, all I really want is my pass, to get approval from the people in the hype class When I look back now, then I might laugh, 'cause I write raps and you might clap But as a kid without identity comparisons to frenemies is real, but it's a trap So our kids are in a pickle trynna match this Chasin' peer approval like they're it, playin' monkey in the middle And I know it sounds fickle, but the trap is If you got a penny then you mad at the one who's got a nickel So it's gonna take a little bit of practice Chasin' after God who created you with purpose and a mission And it seems like a riddle, but the fact is He proclaims that you're very good, all you gotta do is listen So now I know that life isn't just a competition When I see what you got, I don't think of what I'm missin' If I write my story based on yours then that is truly fiction 'Cause it's already been written by the one who's truly risen Now I share that, and I care that I can give His love by makin others aware of that On the day He made us our Father declared that The bread of life made us all beyond compare - facts So if we forget that we were made in His image And hold up what someone else got, that is a shame 'Cause we'll go 0-and-forever when we try to play them games It's a trap, to look at him or her And think what would occur If we had this or that (It's a trap) It's a trap, no matter where you've been All gifts they come from Him, no need to fill the gap (It's a trap) It's a trap, to look at him or her And think what would occur If we had this or that (It's a trap) It's a trap, no matter where you've been All gifts they come from Him, no need to fill the gap (It's a trap)

Call me G*Natural, when I'm on the mic, it's the place to be, cause everytime I Grab the mic, I gotta keep it 97 plus 3, so lemme get this Off my chest, a topic important that I gotsta mention, cause everytime I Grab the mic and rock it, it's the thing that grabs your attention, here's some clues Michael Jackson did this, in the title of a hit song, and not to Do this to a dead horse, but the Whispers said and it just goes on The Bangles told me they all had it, the Grizzlies made him their 2nd draft pick The word is a synonym for rhythm in a track, but it's getting away, we gotta bring it back I don't mind the fusion of hip-hop with R&B But way too many producers are doing this and I think it's a tragedy, you wouldn't make no Automobile with an audible wheel and then forget the driver's seat, so how you gonna Make a rap and then create a track with no discernable beat? C'mon now! Is it really that hard? I know how, to make a drum track move with a low growl Toss in a few jokes kinda lowbrow, without murdering the beat, Nicole Brown Oh wow, maybe that line just caught you by surprise, but that's what it's Like to be jonesing for a good beat, but the song is like "DENIED" Why you cut the beat out? I thought this was supposed to be a hip-hop joint Please don't cut the beat out, listening to a banging beat, that's half the point If you cut the beat out, I can feel the void from my ears into my brain And I won't say another rhyme, until you bring the beat back in again BRING THE BEAT BACK, BRING THE BEAT BACK BRING THE BEAT BACK HOMIE, BRING THE BEAT BACK BRING THE BEAT BACK, BRING THE BEAT BACK BRING THE BEAT BACK PLAYA, BRING THE BEAT BACK When I was a young man, 40s were a strong drink that'll get you lifted Now that I'm in my 40s, the new rap's got me feelin' antagonistic Don't get me wrong, I know it's artistic, but when you take the beat out, I miss it It's like, what are you, sadistic? I hope my mind will change, but I'm not optimistic So all you hip-hop producers, don't do me like that And if you take out the beat, then put it right back You've got control keep it going, otherwise the flow you're deploying will Not sound dope, but mostly annoying It's like you're in bed and you get a meddlesome knock at the door, or like you're At the zoo, the lion says to you, "I'm not gonna roar," because a Brotha like me is always gonna be hip-hop to the core, and so a Rap without a beat is cool but it's not hip-hop anymore, so please Go back to the track and just edit... Edit... Edit ... Otherwise you're showing me that you just don't get it... get it... get it... I bet it's Unintentional, but an accident, to put rap on a track that's lacking it You call that hip-hop, it's inaccurate, there is a matter of the beat you gotta factor in, and ride It like a tractor in the back green... Jump on it like trampoline, or bite In like a nectarine in a fruit salad, get a taste of a new palate Cause it's valid that the beat's stacked like a pallet jack, or a horse that'll gallop back To the man in a famous scene, was I born with it, or is it Maybelline? So if you're able lean to the side, throw ya hands up, and make a scene Cause when I spit fire on the track, I burn the mic, the clip, and the cabling, I'm Cold hearted, all my rap dreams have dearly departed, so all that I ask is Please keep the beat on the track, and all that mumble rap? DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED Why you cut the beat out? I thought this was supposed to be a hip-hop joint Please don't cut the beat out, listening to a banging beat, that's half the point If you cut the beat out, I can feel the void from my ears into my brain And I won't say another rhyme, until you bring the beat back in again BRING THE BEAT BACK, BRING THE BEAT BACK BRING THE BEAT BACK HOMIE, BRING THE BEAT BACK BRING THE BEAT BACK, BRING THE BEAT BACK BRING THE BEAT BACK PLAYA, BRING THE BEAT BACK

I be watchin screens, watchin watchin watchin screens I be watchin screens, watchin watchin watchin screens I be watchin screens, watchin watchin watchin screens But still I bring it back to the Word, nah mean Gaze into the Black Mirror deep inside my Homeland In an era full of Mad Men trynna be my own man Every 24 another Scandal in the West Wing And integrity is in Jeopardy, i've never seen Stranger Things In times like these when we feel Lost, in the thick of it We yearn to become Unbreakable like Kimmy Schmidt We learn to let the Good Times tell us who we are They help reduce the pressure, avoid the ER But in a House of Cards, fallacy is Limitless We stress when our objectives become Arrested Developments Back at The Office we try to earn quotas Take our eyes off the Pitch and then miss the Burn Notice, even If you're POTUS, approvals at a chronic low? The cross is The Shield, ain't no need to enroll at Quantico 'Cause it's A Different World, if you live by faith alone Ain't no need for Living Single trynna win that Game of Thrones 'Cause when you're Touched By An Angel up in this hood life Even Crazy Ex-Girlfriend can be The Good Wife If the Handmaid's Tale is best, girl, we Can't get caught up fantasy idlin' on Westworld 'Cause freedom now is so hot, no longer Mr. Robot What's Happening is grace, a catalytic converter So if my life shines bright like the Friday Night Lights, then God'll Show me How to Get Away With Murder - Psych What we even watchin screens for? It's something that we need more But to Awaken our Force is like Infinity War Instead of checkin' flicks we need The Passion of the Christ But from Training Day to Twilight we can't connect with God's Life We can't get right, It's A Wonderful Life, but it feels Rocky when you're in The Dark Knight When you feel Unforgiven and you need Independence Days are long like the hair on the Princess Bride of Christ? You feel more like the mistress. But the Godfather still the one that fixes Despicable Me thinks I Am Legend. The Silence of the Lamb when He faced the Sanhedrin It's step one to put down the Menace II Society so the Nightmare's finished On Elm Street or West Side the Story the same; you want the Juice you gotta call on His name Cause the Lion King and the Prince of Thieves has been Robin Hoods of Mid-Summer Night's Dreams So the Boyz in the Hood are playing Hunger Games And the Dream Girls just can't Do the Right Thing It's more than a Brave Heart the reach the End Game Put down the Pulp Fiction and Shawshanks Redemption comes when the Holy Ghost is Inside Man just check the Son 'cause he's Returnin' like the Jedi I be watchin screens, watchin watchin watchin screens I be watchin screens, watchin watchin watchin screens I be watchin screens, watchin watchin watchin screens And know just what you're seein' isn't always what it seems I open my phone up to see these notices show up that need my focus And so I'm a read the moment I know of em See the goal is to stay up to date with all of the latest and greatest So I can have all the apps and play all my games in one place It's also distracting me from reality's tragedies that I'd rather not face Unless I can have this in front of me So I see what I wanna see, I can be who I wanna be In my world I'm a name on a screen, and I can be famous It seems So crazy to think that, I won't ever make it, because I'm watching my phone instead of Addressing the basics Since I wanna be an Annedroid with a Bluetooth antenna I need a Snapchat with a Hashtag, and a youtube channel Tweeting daily for my fans, and sharing on Instagram And showing stories on Facebook to everyone I can Putting musical playlists on Pandora and Spotify And then I open Sound Cloud to look at all the replies Then I'm also checking Kik, Google Hangouts and Viber My yahoo email, and my gmail, as well as my Google Drive It's a way to stay connected, so I can see what's next it's Also how to watch TV, thanks to Hulu and Netflix But I recognize not everyone has a screen on their phone You didn't Uber with Google Maps to the Tinder date you found with Chrome That you paid for with paypal, well if not then lesson learned I didn't come to Crush your Candy man, I'm just the Messenger
