Mama Tried (Live Fillmore East, New York, NY, April 26, 1971) - song lyrics

The first I remember knowin'
Was that lonesome whistle blowin'
And a youngin's dream
Of growin' up to ride

On a freight train leavin' town
Not knowin' where I was bound
No one could steer me right
But mama tried

Was the only rebel child
From a family meek and mild
Mama seemed to know
What lay in store

In spite of all my
Sunday learnin'
For the bad I kept on turnin'
And mama couldn't hold me anymore

And I turned 21 in prison
Doin' life without parole
No one could steer me right
But mama tried, mama tried

Mama tried to raise me better
But her pleadin' I denied
That leaves no one but me to blame
'Cause mama tried

Dear old daddy rest his soul
Left my mom a heavy load
She tried so very hard
To fill his shoes

Workin' hours without rest
Wanted me to have the best
Oh, she tried to raise me right
But I refused

And I turned 21 in prison
Doin' life without parole
No one could steer me right
But mama tried, mama tried

Mama tried to raise me better
But her pleadin' I denied
That leaves no one but me to blame
'Cause mama tried

And I turned 21 in prison
Doin' life without parole
No one could steer me right
But mama tried, mama tried

Mama tried to raise me better
But her pleadin' I denied
That leaves no one but me to blame
'Cause mama tried
That leaves no one but me to blame
'Cause mama tried

Old man down Way down, down, down by the docks of the city Blind and dirty Asked me for a dime, a dime for a cup of coffee I got no dime but I got some time to hear his story My name is August West And I love my Pearly Baker best more than my wine More than my wine More than my maker, though he's no friend of mine Everyone said I'd come to no good, I knew I would Pearly, believe them Half of my life I spent doin' time for some other fucker's crime The other half found me stumbling around drunk on Burgundy wine But I'll get back on my feet someday The good Lord willin', if He says I may I know that the life I'm livin's no good I'll get a new start, live the life I should I'll get up and fly away I'll get up and fly away, fly away Pearly's been true True to me, true to my dyin' day he said I said to him I said to him, "I'm sure she's been" I said to him, "I'm sure she's been true to you" I got up and wandered Wandered downtown, nowhere to go but to just hang around I've got a girl Named Bonnie Lee, I know that girl's been true to me I know she's been, I'm sure she's been true to me

Bertha (Live at Fillmore East, New York, NY, April 27, 1971) Grateful Dead I had a hard run Running from your window I was all night running, running, running I wonder if you care? I had a run-in Run around and run down Run around a corner Run smack into a tree I had to move Really had to move That's why if you please I am on my bended knees Bertha don't you come around here anymore Dressed myself in green I went down to the sea Try to see what's going down Maybe read between the lines Had a feeling I was falling, falling, falling Turned around to see Heard a voice calling, calling, calling You was comin after me Back to me I had to move Really had to move That's why if you please I am on my bended knees Bertha don't you come around here anymore Ran into a rainstorm Ducked into a bar door It was all night pouring, pouring rain But not a drop on me Test me, test me Why don't you arrest me? Throw me in the jail house Until the sun goes down Till it go down I had to move Really had to move That's why if you please I am on my bended knees Bertha don't you come around here anymore

Me and my uncle went ridin' down, South colorado, west texas bound. We stopped over in santa fe, That bein' the point just about half way, And you know it was the hottest part of the day. I took the horses up to the stall, Went to the barroom, ordered drinks for all. Three days in the saddle, you know my body hurt, It bein' summer, I took off my shirt, And I tried to wash off some of that dusty dirt. When texas cowboys, they's all around, With liquor and money, they loaded down. So soon after payday, know it seemed a shame; You know my uncle, he starts a friendly game, High-low jack and the winner take the hand. My uncle starts winnin'; cowboys got sore. One of them called him, and then two more, Accused him of cheatin'; oh no, it couldn't be. I know my uncle, he's as honest as me, And I'm as honest as a gamblin' man can be. One of them cowboys, he starts to draw, And I shot him down, lord he never saw. Well I grabbed a bottle, cracked him in the jaw, Shot me another, oh damn he won't grow old. In the confusion, my uncle grabbed the gold, And we high-tailed it down to mexico. I love those cowboys, I love their gold, I loved my uncle, God rest his soul, Taught me good, lord, taught me all I know Taught me so well, I grabbed that gold And I left his dead ass there by the side of the road.

She came without a farthing A babe without a name So much ado about nothing Is what she'd try to say So much ado, my lover So many games we played Through every fleeted Summer Through every precious day All dead, all dead All the dreams we had And I wonder why I still live on All dead, all dead And alone, I'm spared My sweeter half instead All dead and gone All dead All dead, all dead At the rainbow's end And still, I hear her own sweet song All dead, all dead Take me back again You know my little friend's All dead and gone Her ways are always with me I wander all the while But, please, you must forgive me I am old but still a child All dead, all dead But I should not grieve In time it comes to everyone All dead, all dead But in hope, I breathe Of course, I don't believe You're dead and gone All dead and gone
